3 Ways to Know If You’re Ready to Become a Surrogate?
By Kyla Helwig
Being a surrogate mother is not an easy task. It requires a lot of patience, strength, determination, and, practically, excellent health. If you are interested in becoming a surrogate, there are a few ways that you can assess yourself. At Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we want to equip women to become surrogate mothers and educate them about the risks and benefits of pursuing such a unique process. As a surrogate mother, you may undergo some significant physical and emotional challenges. Still, as long as you make sure you’re prepared, surrogacy can be a beautiful process. Here are three ways to know if you’re ready to become a surrogate mother.
1. You Fulfill All the Physical Requirements
Being a surrogate mother requires a woman to be in peak physical condition. Any physical illness or disease that may threaten a baby will disqualify you. This may seem harsh, but it is vital that our agency protects both the surrogate mother, the baby, and intended parents from emotional and physical harm. The initial list of material requirements are as follows:
- History of at least one uncomplicated pregnancy in the past
- Between the ages of 21-39
- BMI of 18-31
- Free from all sexually transmitted disease
- Not taking any illicit or unprescribed drugs
- No new tattoos, piercings, or blood transfusions within the past year
If you meet these requirements, you are one step closer to being ready to be a surrogate mother. However, even if you meet the initial physical qualifications to be a surrogate mother, you will still have to undergo a physical examination by a fertility specialist to guarantee that your body will be able to handle the surrogacy process. Our Surrogate agency must comply with these measures because they ensure the child’s safety and protect you.
2. You Fulfill All the Mental Requirements
You will have to meet the physical requirements to become a surrogate mother, but there are also a few mental requirements. Therefore, surrogacy can be mentally challenging for some women. Our agency has some qualifications to ensure you won’t undergo serious mental turmoil throughout the process. Here are the requirements:
- No history of postpartum depression
- Free from mental health issues
- Not on medication for any mental health issues
In addition to fulfilling these requirements, you will also have to undergo a mental health evaluation. A specialist will determine if you are mentally healthy enough to become a surrogate mother in this evaluation. If you aren’t, that is ok. It is better to protect your mind from harm than continue with surrogacy.
3. You Have a Desire to Serve a Family
If you are eager to provide for a family uniquely, you may be ready to become a surrogate mother. Surrogacy allows women to use their anatomical features to provide a child for a couple who cannot have their own children. If this concept is exciting and meets the other requirements, it may be time for you to apply to be a surrogate mother!
