A Birth Mother’s Perspective on Adoption: The Professional Birth Mother

Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy was definitely not on Sarah’s to-do list. She had just graduated from college and had landed a starting level position with her dream company, already focused on getting a promotion. While she had always dreamed of being a mother when she was younger, she didn’t picture it looking like this. How was she supposed to care for a baby when she was just now finding her own path. Sarah knew if she raised her child, she wouldn’t be able to maintain her career and provide her baby with the love and care he or she deserved. Therefore, she started exploring her remaining options – abortion or adoption.

In the end, after much deliberation and support from friends and family, Sarah turned to Adoption Choices of Oklahoma for help. At first, the idea of placing her baby for adoption made her feel guilty –  like she had given up. However, her adoption caseworker quickly assured her that that was not the case.

Sarah’s Adoption Journey as a Professional Birth Mother

After she overcame her initial hesitation, Sarah was able to begin forming her adoption plan. She started by imagining what she wanted her baby’s future to look like,  picturing a happy home with a mother and father. Perhaps the family had a big dog like she had had growing up. Maybe her child would spend the weekends hiking in the mountains, laughing as the sun shines on their face. The possibilities were endless!

One of the biggest challenges for Sarah was deciding if she wanted an open adoption, semi-open adoption or closed adoption. Did she want to know her baby? What if the adoptive family didn’t like her? However, with the help of her support system, she decided that an open adoption would be best. Having an open adoption would allow her to fulfill her desire to have a relationship with her child while still allowing her to focus on having a successful career.

Now, Sarah’s office is filled with pictures of her daughter, including a picture of her enjoying her latest adventure – kayaking with her parents and siblings. Looking back, Sarah couldn’t be more thankful for her adoption journey. It changed her life for the better.

She wants other birth mothers to know that they are not alone. If you are considering adoption, she says, go with your gut. There is no shame in pursuing a career.
