Adoption after Birth is an Option in Oklahoma
Even the best-laid plans can go awry. In the delivery room, emotions are high. The room is buzzing with movement as doctors and nurses prepare to help bring your child into the world. It’s a natural response for you to feel overwhelmed and underprepared on the day that your child is born. However, some birth mothers cannot shake that uneasy feeling even after their baby is born. If you are one of these women, please know that you have options. Placing your baby for adoption is still a possibility.
Here at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we can assist you in creating an adoption plan for any newborn under the age of three.
No Shame
Choosing to place your baby for adoption after birth does not make you any less of a parent. In fact, choosing adoption is one of the most significant parenting decisions you will ever make. When it comes to creating your post-birth adoption plan, your skilled adoption caseworker can meet you at the hospital or in the comfort of your own home. Our staff will treat you with the same respect as if you were a birth mother who had come to us during her pregnancy. We understand that life can change in an instant and will never shame you for that. Like you, we only desire for your child to have the best future possible.
Post-Birth Adoption Process
Like any adoption plan, a post-birth adoption plan is customizable to fit your desires as a birth mother. Your adoption caseworker will explain all of your options, including open or closed adoption. At Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we strongly encourage open adoptions, because we believe they are beneficial for everyone involved. However, if you decide against a fully open adoption, we will gladly respect your choice.
Shortly after, if not during your first meeting, your adoption caseworker will present you with some adoptive family profile books to review. We want you to be involved with the adoption process as much as possible. Therefore, your adoption caseworker will merely provide support and counseling as you sift through the profiles.
As you narrow down potential families, your adoption caseworker will facilitate meetings with the individual(s) and provide their professional opinion. After those meetings have ended and you have come to a final decision, our legal staff will walk you through the legal process and help finalize the adoption.
Post-Birth Adoption Resources
While you may not be able to utilize all of our adoption resources like financial assistance, many of our adoption services and resources do extend beyond birth and the adoption finalization. As a birth mother who has chosen adoption after birth, we can provide you with access to postpartum care, post-adoption counseling referrals to social services, and assistance when any educational or vocational goals you may have.
