Adoption in Oklahoma: You are in Control of Your Adoption Plan
When you first discovered that you’re pregnant, you probably felt lost and alone. You may still feel lost and alone, scouring the internet, searching for information on adoption. Adoption Choices of Oklahoma wants you to know that you’re not alone. We’ll be here to help you on your journey. We’ll act as a guide while you make the important decisions. We’ll offer advice, but you’ll be the one calling the shots. Once you start crafting your adoption plan, you’ll begin to feel in control again.
As a Birth Mother, You Can Choose the Adoptive Family
As a birth mother, you’ll get to review profiles on the available adoptive families. You can choose your child’s adoptive parents based on their values and interests. If their beliefs are similar to yours, they might be a good match.
When choosing an adoptive family, you may consider the family’s lifestyle and environment. Do the adoptive parents live in a community with nice parks and good schools? What do they do for a living? What are their friends and family members like?
As a birth mother, you can consider transracial (interracial) adoption or LGBTQ+ adoption.
As a Birth Mother, You Can Choose the Type of Adoption You want in Your Adoption Plan
You’ll have to choose between three types of adoption: open adoption, semi-open adoption, and closed adoption. Through the type of adoption, you’ll get to decide how much contact you’ll have with your child and the adoptive family following the adoption.
If you would like to maintain contact with the adoptive family (if having a relationship with your child is important to you), you can choose open adoption. If you think putting distance between yourself and the adoptive family is what’s best (if you think the distance will make returning to normal life easier), you can choose a closed adoption. If you would like to find some middle ground (if you would like to maintain some contact but keep your distance), you can choose semi-open adoption.
As a Birth Mother, You Can Create a Birth Plan
As a birth mother, you’ll get to create a birth plan. You’ll get to make several decisions about what will happen when you give birth. You’ll get to choose the hospital, and you’ll get to decide how much privacy you’ll have when you give birth.
Sometimes, the adoptive parents are in the delivery room when the birth mother gives birth. If you manage to form a close bond with the adoptive parents, and if you feel comfortable, you can invite the adoptive parents to the delivery. On the other hand, if you don’t feel comfortable having the adoptive parents in the room with you, they don’t need to be present.
After giving birth, some birth mothers like to spend some time with the baby. They use this time to say “goodbye” before the adoptive parents take the child home. If you would like some alone time with your baby, that’s fine. If you don’t think spending time with your baby is a good idea, if you think a clean break would make things easier, that’s also fine.
