Considering Adoption in Oklahoma as a Pregnant Woman
As a pregnant woman with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy, there may be a million questions on your mind. Yet, perhaps you’ve considered your options and have decided to look into choosing adoption. Or maybe you’re curious about the adoption process and would like to learn more.
If, for any reason, you are considering adoption in Oklahoma as a pregnant woman, then you’ve come to the right place! We would love to answer your questions, address your concerns and give you insights into all things adoption.
Here is everything you need to know when you’re considering adoption and facing an unplanned pregnancy.
Why Choose Adoption?
There are many pregnant women who have asked themselves this same question, but no woman’s situation is exactly the same. You are an individual and your circumstances are unique. This means that there are as many reasons to choose adoption as there are women who have chosen to place their child for adoption.
Maybe you are not ready to be a parent yet. Perhaps you don’t have the means to raise a child and want to give them the best life possible. There are no good or bad reasons. And no matter what your reason is, choosing adoption means choosing love. So, why choose adoption? Perhaps a better question to ask yourself would be, why not choose adoption?
How to Know if Adoption is Right for You
It may seem daunting, but this is something only you can decide for yourself. Consider your other options: terminating the pregnancy or raising your child. If you don’t feel confident about choosing either of those choices, then adoption may be your best option. Be honest with yourself and think carefully about which choice you believe you will still feel okay with in the future.
This is a big decision, and it’s perfectly natural to take your time deciding. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and never feel ashamed or pressured into a choice.
Understanding the Three Types of Adoption
In order to make the best decision for you and your child, it may be helpful to have a clear understanding of what adoption is and what the adoption process could look like. One of the first choices you’ll make is deciding what type of adoption you want. There are 3 types of adoption to choose from: open, semi-open, and closed.
With open and semi-open adoptions, the level of communication and contact you have with your child and their adoptive family is your decision. You are in control of the adoption process and will be able to make decisions on behalf of yourself and your child up until placement.
If you choose to have a closed adoption, there will be no communication or shared information between any of the parties involved. This means you agree to relinquish your parental rights and once you give birth, our adoption agency will take care of your child until we find the best adoptive family.
Understanding the Adoption Process
The adoption process may vary somewhat between adoption agencies, but, at our adoption agency, it can be customized to best fit your needs. We will also assign you with an adoption caseworker who will walk with you every step of the way. After you have met together, you will create your adoption plan. This will be the step-by-step and personalized guide to your adoption journey. Once this is complete, you will then move forward to the next steps in the adoption process. These steps include:
- Choosing an adoptive family
- Accessing a range of resources and services to aid you in your adoption journey
- Putting together a hospital birth plan for delivery
- Deciding if you want to receive post-birth support and counseling
Familiarizing yourself with the adoption process can go a long way to helping you feel more comfortable about choosing adoption. Doing thorough online research, reading relevant blogs, and reaching out to your adoption caseworker with any questions you may have are all ways to learn more about adoption, so that you can make an informed and confident decision.
