Surrogate Mothers Today
“What is a surrogate mother?” is probably the biggest question you have. You have an idea that it involves carrying a child to full term, but you don’t know all of the needed details before deciding. The confusion around surrogacy is typical, and we are happy to explain the types of surrogacy that exist to help you make the best choice for your current situation.
Traditional surrogacy is the most familiar form, and it is no longer legal. A conventional surrogate would become impregnated by a donor or intended parent’s sperm joining their egg. The surrogate would carry the child to full term and, hopefully, hand the baby to the intended parents. Traditional surrogates were the biological mothers, and relations created complications. For this reason, traditional surrogacy is banned across the US.
Gestational surrogacy is the only legal form of surrogacy. A gestational carrier is a surrogate mother who legally agrees to have the intended parents’ embryo transferred to her uterus, hoping that the embryo implants. The gestational surrogate then carries the child to full-term birth and hands the baby to the intended parents. A gestational carrier is not in any way a biological relative to the child.
How to Become a Surrogate Mother
The process of becoming a surrogate is fascinating, and it allows you to see how far our medical industry has come in its ability to increase the quality of people’s lives. You see, the intended parent’s sperm or egg along with donor sperm or egg are given to a lab. Under specific conditions, the sperm and egg combine to create an embryo. Once ready for transfer, you will have the embryo placed inside of your uterus, and it feels just like a regular pap smear.
Before the transfer, both you and the intended parents undergo psychological evaluations and background checks. You then begin a hormone treatment regime that may include birth control in order to guarantee fertility and safe delivery. As a surrogate mother, you visit an appointment OB regularly, take vitamins prescribed to you, and follow a healthy diet. Based on your agreement, you might have the comfort of intended parents at every doctor’s visit as some want to experience the entire pregnancy and feel connected to you and the growing child.
