FAQs about Creating an Adoption Plan in Oklahoma
Facing an unplanned pregnancy can be scary. As a pregnant woman or girl considering adoption, you probably have a lot of questions about what adoption entails. Questions on where to begin, what to expect, and what to do. Adoption Choices of Oklahoma is here to provide answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about creating an adoption plan.
1) What Services and Benefits come with Choosing Adoption?
Adoption can relieve some of the stress that comes with an unplanned pregnancy. Young girls fear that parenthood will force them to put their dreams on hold. Adoption allows birth mothers to pursue their dreams while giving their children a fulfilling life.
Women who lack financial resources fear they won’t be able to care for their child during nor after the pregnancy. Birth mothers can receive financial aid through agencies like Adoption Choices of Oklahoma. We help birth mothers cover rent, groceries, prenatal care (pre-birth medical care), and other expenses. We can also help you apply for government aid.
2) Can I Choose My Child’s Adoptive Family?
Yes. As a birth mother, you can decide who your child will grow up with. You will be assigned a birth parent counselor who will provide files on available adoptive families. You can choose an adoptive family based on the files provided.
3) How do I Pick an Adoptive Family?
Choosing one adoptive family from a large assortment of people can be difficult. We can provide guidance, but we can’t tell you who will make the best adoptive parents. You’ll have to decide who will fit the role.
Think about what’s best for your child. Do you want your child to grow up in a two-parent home, or would you be willing to work with a single adoptive parent? Do you want your child to be raised by people who have similar values or interests as you? Do you want an adoptive family that practices the same religion as you? Creating a list of qualities you desire can make choosing an adoptive family easier.
4) How will I Know which Type of Adoption is Right for Me?
There are three different types of adoption: open, semi-open, and closed. Initially, closed adoption was the only option available for those creating an adoption plan. Open adoption has become popular in recent years.
Open adoption is when the birth mother and the adoptive parents stay in touch following the child’s birth. The birth mother can receive pictures of her growing child, and she can meet with her child or attend family events. Closed adoption is when there is no contact between the birth mother and the adoptive family. The birth mother cannot interact with her child. Semi-open adoption is when there is a minimal amount of contact between the two parties.
The best type of adoption varies from person to person. Some birth mothers want to stay connected to their children, and some adoptive parents are willing to stay in touch. Some birth mothers and adoptive parents, however, may want some distance. You’ll have to decide how much contact you’ll want to maintain before committing to an adoption plan.
5) Can I Spend Time with My Baby in the Hospital?
That depends on you and your birth plan.
Some birth mothers want to spend time with their child. They want to hold and say goodbye to their child before placing him or her in the adoptive family’s care. Other birth mothers feel it’s better to send the child straight to the nursery. They fear spending too much time with the child after birth will make saying goodbye more difficult.
It’s best to create your birth plan well before going into labor. Discuss what you want to do with your adoptive family.
