Frequently Asked Questions for Pregnant Women in OK Considering Adoption

As you begin to contemplate placing your child for adoption, the chances are that your mind is running wild with questions, but you don’t even know where to begin. No worries! This overwhelming feeling is a completely natural response when our minds are attempting to understand a new concept or idea – especially when our decisions will impact the future of someone we love.

To better help you filter through all the thoughts in your head, Adoption Choices of Oklahoma has compiled a list of frequently asked questions for birth mothers.

Q1: If I place my baby for adoption, will I ever be able to see them again?

A: Yes! When helping you create an adoption plan, your adoption caseworker will explain all of your options – including an open adoption or semi-open adoption. Both of those options would allow you to have some sort of relationship with your child and their adoptive family. If you desire to have a relationship, your adoption caseworker will work with you to determine the level of openness that fits your needs and desires.

Q2: What if I don’t want a relationship with my baby?

A: While Adoption Choices of Oklahoma encourages all birth mothers to consider some form of open adoption, we will still support you if you feel if a closed adoption is best for you. Should you choose a closed adoption, all adoption records will be legally sealed.

Q3: Do I need the birth father’s consent to place my baby for adoption? What if I don’t know who he is?

A: All parental rights, including the birth father’s, must be terminated for an adoption to be finalized. However, if you are unsure of the birth father’s identity or are unable to locate him, our legal team will then take the appropriate actions to help your adoption journey proceed.

Q4: Will placing my baby for adoption cost me anything?

A: No, placing your baby for adoption will not cost you a cent. Additionally, while you will not be compensated for placing your baby for adoption, you will be eligible for financial support to cover your pregnancy expenses. Your adoption caseworker and child’s adoptive family will work with you to create an appropriate budget for your needs. This budget will cover all court-approved living expenses, including housing, groceries, transportation, and medical care.

Q5: Can I choose my baby’s adoptive family?

A: Yes! Each prospective adoptive family submits a profile book full of information. Your adoption caseworker will narrow down our wide selection based on your preferences. From there, you will have the opportunity to review various families until you find the best match for your baby.

Q6: What if I change my mind?

A: While our adoption caseworkers and counselors will work with you to make sure you are 100% ready to place your baby for adoption, you can still change your mind. In the state of Oklahoma, you have 72 hours after your baby’s birth to sign the relinquishment paperwork.

Q7: My baby is here. Is it too late to choose adoption?

A: No, Adoption Choices of Oklahoma can help place newborns up to 3 years old. Should you choose adoption after your baby is born, one of our adoption caseworkers can meet you to discuss your options, whether it be in your hospital room or the comfort of your own home.
