Henry’s Adoption Story and Open Adoption

Henry is six years old and loves dinosaurs and tractors. He knows that he was adopted, but doesn’t fully understand what that means yet. All he knows is that he grew in Mama Lucy’s belly, but she chose his mommy and daddy to raise him. Mama Lucy and his sister Ella visit him often, and he gets to show them his new drawings and toys. He also gets to play with Ella while the adults sit and talk.

Henry’s mom, Lucy, placed him for adoption after she and his father went through a nasty divorce. She was already working two full-time jobs and knew she couldn’t provide for him on her own. When she talked to her adoption caseworker about her adoption plan and how she felt like she was abandoning her son, her adoption caseworker brought up open adoption. By choosing open adoption, Lucy could have an open line of communication with her son and his family — she could even visit with them. Lucy knew that open adoption was the right thing for her, and, after choosing Henry’s adoptive family, the rest was history.

Henry will learn more about his adoption story as he gets older. One day, he will understand what sacrifice that Lucy made when he was born. For now, however, Lucy and his adoptive parents want to keep everything as simple as possible.

The Power to Choose Open Adoption

As a birth mother, you have the power to choose how your adoption will look. Like Henry’s birth mother Lucy, you can choose an open adoption and become involved in your child’s life. You can partner with your child’s adoptive family to share your story.

Choosing to place your baby for adoption does not make you weak. You are not abandoning your baby. You have opportunities to be involved in their life, whether through open or semi-open adoption.

Benefits of Open Adoption

Open adoption helps normalize relationships between birth parents and their children. Children are some of the most open-hearted and open-minded individuals ever. While they are very curious, they are also very accepting. They are not going to hate you for the choices you made.

Having an open adoption can also provide you with a sense of closure. You can have the assurance that your child is well taken care of and thriving.
