Holiday Traditions for an Open Adoption in Oklahoma

The holiday season is here, and it is a time where people share love and celebrate with their families, friends, and people they care about. For you as an open adoption birth mother, this is the time where you can start a holiday tradition with your birth child. Here at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we want to assist you in making this holiday season with your birth child the best it can be. We have a small list of ideas that you can take a look at to get ideas on how to approach holiday traditions for an open adoption with your birth child this season.

Think of Traditions You and Your Family Shared

When thinking of what holiday traditions you want to share with your birth child, try to think back to when you were a kid. How did you and your family celebrate the holidays? Did you guys have any holiday traditions? This is an opportunity for you to share something from your childhood with your birth child. If there are multiple traditions that come to your mind, you can try making a list and re-examine them. You want to make sure that you go with a tradition that you see yourself doing every year with your birth child. You also want to pick a tradition that excites you, one where you wake up on the day you are going to do the tradition every year, and you are just filled with excitement.

We say you want to pick one that you are excited about because your birth child will be able to tell if you are enjoying the tradition. Children are very perceptive, and your birth child will know if you are enjoying the time you guys are spending together when celebrating with the tradition you guys share. If you are having fun and enjoying the time you guys are having, your birth child will be having fun and enjoying the time as well.

When considering what tradition you want to share with your birth child and the adoptive family, also think about how they will react to the tradition you pick to share with them. Will the tradition you pick be as exciting for them as it is for you? You also want to consider your birth child’s interests as well. You do not want to pick a tradition and put a lot of effort into it and then have your birth child and the adoptive family have no interest in it. You want to pick a tradition that you all will have fun with. Plus, having part of the tradition incorporated with something that your birth child is interested in will make it easier for you to introduce it to them, which will make the tradition more special for them.

Think about Creating a Tradition With Your Child

If you are not sure what tradition you should share with your birth child, that is okay, there is another option you can go with. You can create a holiday tradition with your birth child. Ask them if they would like to help you think of ideas and activities for you guys to do during the holidays.

Creating a tradition with your birth child also presents the opportunity for you to create something special with the adoptive family as well. Allowing for the adoptive family to be involved and voice their opinions will help them, your birth child, and you feel more invested in having a holiday tradition together. Doing this will also build your relationship with the adoptive family and help you guys come closer and find more things you all love about each other. Having everyone involved in creating a holiday tradition for you all to celebrate also helps everyone be excited about each holiday season’s tradition.

Consult with the Adoptive Family

When thinking about what tradition you want to share with your birth child or creating one with your birth child, do not be afraid to talk with the adoptive family. You chose them to care for your child, and they are a great source of what your child enjoys and their interests. You can also talk to them about their holiday traditions and which ones your birth child has the most fun with. Doing this can allow you to incorporate that tradition with the tradition you want to share with your birth child or the one you guys are going to create. This will also help your child enjoy the tradition more and be more interested in it.
