Hospital Adoptions: What happens in the hospital if I’m giving my baby up for adoption?

By Valentina Escobar

Pregnant, considering adoption, and unsure what will happen during your hospital stay? Adoption can be a difficult choice to make, yet Adoption Choices of Oklahoma is here to help. Going into labor is scary enough, but we will ensure the adoption plan is followed as it should be. As a birth mother, you have rights during the hospital stay, and ensuring those rights are protected is optimal. The hospital stay is an integral part of hospital adoptions in Oklahoma, and this process will protect both birth mom and baby during a sensitive time. Together, with Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we can discuss what will happen in the hospital during an Oklahoma adoption.

Setting up the Hospital Visit

Before any plans are made, Adoption Choices of Oklahoma will provide a counselor to provide and care for you during this time. The adoption counselor will ensure that all your questions are answered and that you are fully equipped for the adoption process. Remember, knowledge is key, and a counselor is filled with all the necessary knowledge concerning adoption in your home state.

The hospital stay is part of the adoption plan, and your counselor will be in charge of any accommodations needed in the process. Even if you have a preferred hospital, that will be part of the birth plan. Other things will be prepped, such as calling a loved one to join you in this marvelous journey or a favorite snack after the birth. Most importantly, your counselor will be waiting for you during the birth to make sure that everything is in place for the adoption that will occur after. No matter what, the person who was with you during the entire adoption process will be at hand to ease the transition.

What are your rights as a birth mother?

Your rights as a birth mother are protected and of utmost importance. First, you have the right to choose adoption and how that will pan out in the process. This will happen because it is your choice. No one else’s. As the birth mother, you choose who your baby ends up with. This is very important, and Adoption Choices of Oklahoma will ensure the baby ends up with loving parents. Also, the birth mother will choose what kind of adoption she would like to pursue, that being either open, semi-open, or closed adoption.

You have the right to a written open adoption agreement. This agreement will set the seal on any agreement regarding future visitation or pictures sent to the birth mother. Although, this is a moral agreement and may not be recognized state by state. A birth mother can name her child on the first birth certificate. This name may be changed on the second certificate issued to the adoptive parents. An adoption attorney will be issued during an adoption. The birth mother has the right to have the costs covered by the adoptive parents.

Counseling can be provided up to six months after the birth. Creating a birth plan that fits your needs is a must, and the adoption agency will guarantee it is followed even if you decide to change your mind last minute about any detail. A birth mother has many rights in the process, and Adoption Choices of Oklahoma wants to certify that these are met.

How is an Adoption finalized?

The adoption will be finalized in the hospital. Your adoption counselor will be prepared for what’s to come when giving a baby up to its adoptive parents. There will be paperwork to sign in the hospital during the visit, and the adoptive parents will most likely take the baby after this process is finished. Adoption Choices of Oklahoma would like to ensure that a birth mother knows her rights during an Oklahoma adoption. Therefore, your adoption counselor will ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the process. This way, the birth mom can take control of her decision, as it may be difficult to see your child go. Adoption is not a decision that is easy to make, but your adoption agency will aid you along the way.

After the Hospital Visit

Adoption Choices of Oklahoma understands this can be an emotional experience, and they are here to help during every part of the process. After the baby is given to the adoptive parents, the birth mom can be sure that baby was given to a happy and loving home.
