How Do I Write an Adoption Plan in Oklahoma?

By Jillian Pappas

If you find yourself with an unexpected pregnancy, you may have a million questions racing through your mind. What’s the right decision for me? Will I be able to afford a pregnancy? How will I support myself? What type of adoption should I choose? These questions are typical for an unplanned pregnancy.

At Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we understand that these questions may be challenging to answer independently. That is why we provide an Oklahoma adoption specialist to help you create an adoption plan tailored to your specific needs.

What is an adoption plan?

Now that you know the first step of the adoption process is to create an adoption plan, you might be wondering, what exactly is an adoption plan? An adoption plan is exactly how it sounds. It’s a guideline outlining your expectations for the adoption process. This article will outline the basic steps to writing an adoption plan in Oklahoma.

Step 1– Contact Adoption Choices of Oklahoma

The first step is to contact an adoption agency. At Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we provide resources to help birth mothers during the entire adoption process. Adoption Choices of Oklahoma understands that the adoption process can be stressful. This is why we have a team dedicated to helping you create your adoption plan.

Step 2– Answer Important Questions

The second step is to reflect and figure out what exactly you would like out of the adoption process. No two adoption stories are the same, and it’s essential you make decisions based on what you feel is right for your situation. Questions that will be answered include:

  • What type of adoption are you considering? Open? Semi-open? Closed?
  • Any preferences towards the adoptive family?
  • Do you want the adoptive family to be older or younger? Single or married?
  • Do you have any preferences towards the adoptive families’ religion?

These questions are all critical to answer. No preference is too small. The decision of who you place your child with is yours alone, and you need to be comfortable with the placement. Some birth mothers choose open adoption because it will allow them to see their child grow. But other birth mothers feel as though a closed adoption is the best choice to remain private. At Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we believe that these decisions are valid. We believe that sticking to your values is essential, and at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we always support the birth mothers’ decisions.

Step 3– Create a Birth Plan

In the third step, you will be creating a detailed birth plan. This step is significant when creating your adoption plan. Labor can be sudden, and it can also cause a lot of stress leading up to it. By creating a hospital plan, you will eliminate stress and anxiety. In addition, knowing you have a written-out birth plan is a sure way of soothing nerves.

In a birth plan, it’s essential to decide a few things. Some essential questions that should be answered in this step include:

  • Who is invited to the hospital during the birth?
  • Who is a part of your support team?
  • Do you want any visits throughout your hospital stay?
  • Is the adoptive family invited?
  • How long would you like to spend time with your baby afterward?
  • Will you want alone time with your baby?

All of these questions are important to your birth plan. However, by answering these questions ahead of time in a detailed adoption plan, you can relax knowing that you have a guideline to follow easily.

Step 4– Post-Placement

In the final step, the birth mother will be creating a plan for post-placement of the adoption. A post-placement plan in Oklahoma is essentially the plan you have for the post-adoption placement of your child. You will likely have decided what type of adoption you plan on selecting. Your post-placement plan will probably account for future meetings, phone calls, or emails with the adoptive family if it’s open adoption. If your adoption is closed, the post-placement plan may be moving on with your life. Whatever you decide, your post-placement plan will be unique to your situation.
