How Many Weeks on Average is a Woman Pregnant Before Choosing Adoption?

Adoption may not be the first thing you think of when you find out you are unexpectedly pregnant. It could take 20 weeks or 39 weeks when you are about to give birth. The number of weeks before choosing adoption depends on you as the birth mother. Each birth mother’s adoption story is different and unique.

You can choose adoption at any week during your pregnancy. There is no right or wrong time to make your decision on adoption. You know what is best for you and your baby, and we are here for you at whatever week you are in your pregnancy. Here at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we want you to take your time deciding because we understand how hard enough it is to have an unplanned pregnancy, but adding adoption into the mix is even more stressful.

  • 4-6 Weeks Pregnant

Finding out that you are unexpectedly pregnant can bring out so many emotions that you’ve never felt before. Birth mothers all have different emotions when they find out they are pregnant, and yours are valid. Your feelings are real. It is okay to be scared and worried about what the future might hold with your pregnancy.

At the start of a pregnancy, your hormones are already making your emotions so high, and it can make you feel like you have to scramble to decide on adoption now. These heightened emotions can make you think about whether or not you should keep and raise your child, get an abortion, or put your child up for adoption.

There are options for you. There is no need to rush this decision because you could regret it if you choose too soon. Instead, take your time, take a breath, and realize that you still have eight more months of pregnancy left to make your decision for yourself and your baby.

  • 20-24 Weeks Pregnant

You’re halfway to meeting your baby! This could be exciting for you, or you could be dreading it. You will be feeling your baby kick and move around, and the realization might be starting to settle in. You may be feeling like time is running out to choose adoption, but that is not true! You have more than enough time to figure out what is best for you and your baby.

At this point, it is too late to choose abortion in Oklahoma. You can only have an abortion up to 15 weeks and six days after the start of your last menstrual period. This is a short deadline compared to other states that allow five or more weeks to choose abortion.

Fortunately, you still have adoption options! Here at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we want to support and help you. If you are just thinking about whether or not adoption is right for you, you can connect with one of our adoption caseworkers. Even if you don’t choose adoption after speaking with us, we are still here to support you through your unexpected pregnancy and help in any way we can.

  • 36-39 Weeks Pregnant

You are nearing the end of your unexpected pregnancy. You may be very eager to be over with this surprising part of your life, or you could be fearful for the end because you know you will have to choose if being a parent is right for you or not. Your baby is getting ready to come out into the world, but you might not be ready.

If you are anxious and worried about being a parent, you can still choose adoption this late in your pregnancy. You can choose adoption on the 36th week, the 39th week, a day before you give birth, anytime! You can call us when you’re lying in your bed at home or lying in the hospital bed.

We have had birth mothers call us when they are a day away from their water breaking. We have seen it all, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help and support! That’s what we are here for. Birth mothers are our top priority, and we want to help you make the best decision possible for yourself and your baby, even when you are on your way to give birth.
