How To Become a Surrogate— the Basics

Imagine if you had the ability to help create a family. Imagine you know two parents who are hopeful about having a child. Imagine wondering if there’s anything you can do to help them have a baby. Well, with surrogacy, that’s 100% possible. Surrogacy is a unique and one-of-a-kind process where a woman has the chance to help form a family. If you’re wondering what becoming a surrogate may entail, look no further. Adoption & Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma has put together an important formation on how to become a surrogate.

 1. Finding a surrogacy agency

The first step in your journey to becoming a surrogate is finding an agency you want to work with, like Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma. It’s important to do your research and find a company whose values line up with your personal values. At the end of the day, the desired goal is to help create a forever family. Take time to research a surrogacy agency that will help you reach that goal.

When finding an agency, remember that there will be other steps to take in order to be considered. You may have to submit an application that will have a general question for you to answer and ask why you want to become a surrogate. For more details in the application process, reach out to Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma. You must also provide your personal and medical history for review. This is to ensure that you made the necessary criteria to become a circuit. There’s also a physical examination and an in-home assessment that you must undergo. This is just to further validate the personal and medical history you provide for the agency. Becoming a gestational surrogate is a big responsibility. Every agency is going to want to ensure that your surrogacy journey will be successful and smooth.

 2. Meet the basic requirements for a gestational carrier

To become a surrogate in OK, there are basic requirements that must be met. This is true for every woman who is interested in the surrogacy process. Some of those basic requirements include, but are not limited to:

· Must be between 21 and 39 years old

· Surrogates must be US citizens

· Surrogates must pass a background check

· Surrogates must be parenting at least one child

· Must not rely currently on public assistance

· Must not be parenting any children on Medicaid, food stamps or TANF

· Must be able to travel as needed for any appointments

· Must have a healthy, stable lifestyle

· Must have a good support system

· Must have the support of spouse or partner

These requirements, as mentioned before, are some of the basic requirements. These are the types of questions agencies ask any woman who is interested in becoming a surrogate.

 3. Successfully complete medical screenings and meet medical requirements

Not only are there basic requirements that need to be met, but they’re also medical requirements. This is put in place to ensure that the pregnancy does have a high likelihood of being successful. These medical requirements include but are not limited to:

· Typically must have a BMI no higher than 30

· Must be free and healthy of any sexually transmitted diseases

· Must not have had postpartum depression after a previous pregnancy

· Must not have any mental health issues

· Must not currently be on or have been on any medication for depression, bipolar, or other mental health issues

· Must not smoke or take illegal drugs

· Must not be alcohol dependent

A potential Oklahoma surrogate must meet these medical requirements to be considered to be a gestational carrier. You may also have to successfully pass an in-person medical screening. This will further validate your medical history and ensure you are currently in good condition to withstand a pregnancy. This will also set the tone for other aspects further along in the surrogacy process, such as fertility treatments, embryo transfer, as well as prenatal care. These aspects are crucial to ensuring a healthy pregnancy and healthy delivery of a baby.
