Mental Health and Psychological Requirements in OK Surrogacy

By Katherine Doherty
When you choose to become a surrogate mother, you are making an incredible, life-changing opportunity. However, there are a lot of requirements you have to pass beforehand so you can continue your surrogacy journey.  This is for your protection and makes sure you are physically and mentally ready to become a surrogate mother. Your mental health is extremely important when you participate in OK surrogacy. Therefore, ensuring you check off the mental health requirements is essential to having a healthy and successful surrogacy pregnancy. At Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we are dedicated to helping you through your surrogacy journey. By ensuring your surrogacy process is as smooth as possible. If you’re interested in learning what psychological requirements in OK surrogacy you need to fulfill, keep reading!

What Are the Psychology Requirements in OK Surrogacy?

Since pregnancy and surrogacy can have an emotional impact on you, it’s important that you can pass these requirements. We know you and the baby you carry will be safe. That’s why surrogacy agencies put these requirements in place for your protection. Here are some ideas of what the mental health requirements look like:
  • You must not have any mental health issues.
  • You can not be on any medication for any mental health issues.
  • Have you had at least one previous, uncomplicated pregnancy, and you did not suffer from any complications such as postpartum depression.
You must pass these checkpoints through a psychological examination and background checks done by us at Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma.

Why Are Mental Health Requirements Necessary?

These requirements are needed for your protection and to ensure the well-being of the child you carry. However, pregnancy takes a physical and emotional toll. The added separation layer in surrogacy can make it a more complex situation. Surrogacy agencies want to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being throughout the surrogacy process.

What Are Other Requirements You Have To Pass?

Although the mental health requirements may seem strict, there are also a variety of medical requirements you have to pass as well. But, again, this ensures you are physically ready for pregnancy because we want both you and the baby to have a smooth pregnancy. Here are some ideas on what these requirements can look like:
  • Be between the ages of 21 to 39. This also has to do with your physical and mental well-being to make sure your body is ready to go through the taxing experience of being pregnant but also be emotionally ready for surrogacy
  • Be healthy and free of any medical complications.
  • You must be able to pass a background check and not have a criminal record.
  • Are actively parenting at least one child at home and cannot be on TANF, Medicaid, or food stamps
  • Have the support of your friends, family, or partner
  • You cannot be a smoker or take any pregnancy-harming drugs.
  • You have had no new tattoos or piercings within the past year.
These do not cover all of the requirements you may have to fulfill, and while they seem extensive, they are put in place for a similar reason to the mental health requirements. At Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we want to ensure a healthy surrogacy pregnancy. While not every pregnancy is the same, and you have had uncomplicated pregnancies in the past, we want to make sure that we can help you as much as possible by preventing any future complications.
