Surrogacy in OK and Egg Donor Body Mass Index
So, you’re considering becoming a surrogate mother and helping a couple or individual grow their family. This is phenomenal. Surrogacy is about giving people the joy of family, and wanting to do that is such a beautiful gift. Millions of people worldwide can not carry a baby to full term for whatever reason. You understand the barriers they face and want to help. You are incredible. We thank you for making a choice to help others find true happiness. Here at Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we want to help you answer any questions you may have about becoming a surrogate in Oklahoma and help get you started on your journey to fulfilling your mission of compassion.
What is a Surrogate Mother?
Several misconceptions around surrogacy leave many wondering about the possibility of surrogacy in Oklahoma and how surrogacy works. The good news is, we are a private licensed agency full of knowledgeable professionals who help make surrogacy clear and prepare you to embark on your incredible journey.
A modern surrogate is a gestational carrier. A gestational surrogate receives the embryo earlier created by a doctor who combined the intended parent and or donor’s sperm and eggs. This embryo is transferred to you during a process called IVF (in vitro fertilization). You share no biological relationship with the child, and the intended parents would be on the birth certificate.
Apply to Be a Surrogate Mother
It is common knowledge that increased body mass index is associated with increased fertility issues. It is also common knowledge that obesity contributes to many health issues from diabetes type 2, heart conditions, and even depression. For this reason, there are strict health requirements a gestational surrogate and intended parents must meet in order to qualify to participate in surrogacy in Oklahoma.
Most physicians will tell you that a healthy range for a female BMI (body mass index) falls somewhere between 18.5 and 25. But we understand that the BMI charts are not an overall indicator of health and act more like a guide. For this reason, our agency’s BMI requirements to become a surrogate mother and or egg donor are that you must fall between 18 to 31. Sliding the scale to 31 allows for women who may weigh more due to lean body mass and height to have the opportunity to participate.
Some might feel that this requirement is too strict. We understand this concern and want you to know that we use this BMI range to ensure the safest birth possible by reducing as many complications as possible. BMI is not the only requirement. To qualify as a gestational carrier:
- You must be a US citizen living in the United States with a birth certificate
- Between the ages of 21-39
- No new tattoos, blood transfusions, or piercing within the past 12 months
- Not taking any illegal drugs
- Must have had at least one complication-free pregnancy
- Cannot have mental health issues nor be on any medication for mental health issues
- Free of mental health issues
- Cannot be living on any form of government assistance
- Non-alcohol dependant
- Healthy and free of STDs
- Not taking any medications that may be harmful to the child
- Cannot be a smoker or living in a house with a smoker within one year of application
- Must agree to submit to intensive background screening
The intended parents must undergo extensive background, physical, and psychological evaluations along with the surrogate mother. The intensive screening ensures the future child has a safe full-term birth and will be raised in a safe environment with people committed to the journey ahead of them.
