Top 3 Reasons Why Intended Parents Use Egg Donation and Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogacy is a process in which a woman is hired to carry and deliver a baby (or babies) for the intended parents. Before the surrogacy begins, the child is (children are) conceived in a laboratory through a process called in vitro fertilization (IVF). Afterwards, the embryos are placed inside the surrogate mother in the hopes that at least one will stick.
The intended parents usually provide their own eggs and sperm for the IVF, but sometimes they use donated eggs or sperm. The surrogate’s egg is never used during gestational surrogacy. If the intended parents decide to use an egg donor, said egg donor will be a separate person, a third party who is absent from the surrogacy process.
There’s a variety of reasons why intended parents pursue gestational surrogacy in Oklahoma, and there’s a variety of reasons why intended parents use egg donors.
Top 3 Reasons Why Intended Parents Use Egg Donation and Gestational Surrogacy
1) The Intended Parents have Previously Dealt with Infertility
Many people pursue gestational surrogacy because of infertility. Some women have suffered miscarriages because their bodies can’t support a developing child. Sometimes couples are unable to conceive at all. One potential reason why a couple may be unable to conceive is because they have weak sperm or unhealthy eggs. If the couple is unable to produce strong sperm for the IVF, they may consider using a sperm bank. Likewise, if they are unable to produce healthy eggs, they may consider using an egg donor.
2) The Intended Parents are Members of the LGBT Community
The vast majority of people pursuing egg donation and gestational surrogacy are members of the LGBT community. Gay couples can’t conceive naturally, so gestational surrogacy is the only way they can have biological children.
LGBT intended parents need donors because they can only provide one piece of the puzzle. Gay men, in particular, may seek egg donation because they can’t provide the egg themselves. Lesbian women could also use egg donation if they have a medical or health concern.
3) The Intended Parents are Single
Most intended parents are married couples, but some intended parents are single. A single individual may seek gestational surrogacy because he or she can’t have children by himself or herself. A single intended parent may seek egg donation for this same reason. A single man, for example, can’t conceive a child by himself. He needs a donor to provide the egg, and he needs a surrogate to carry and deliver the child.
