Types of Birth Fathers
While birth mothers are normally the main focus in the adoption process, birth fathers play a very important role as well. After all, without the birth father, the child in question would not exist. The majority of birth fathers have the reputation of being uninterested or uninvolved. However, here at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, we know that every situation is unique and there are many different types of birth fathers. Nevertheless, it is important to know that birth fathers still have the opportunity to be involved with the adoption process if he is known and present.. No matter the birth father’s involvement, though, know that we are here to help and support you!
Known Birth Fathers
Whether you’re in a relationship with your child’s birth father or not, you may still know who he is. In these situations, it is important to tell the birth father about the child and about the adoption as soon as possible. While it can be a difficult conversation to have if you two are no longer seeing each other, it is important for the birth father to understand his responsibilities throughout the process as well. For instance, if the birth father is known, he will need to sign away parental rights before the adoption can be finalized.
Unknown Birth Fathers
Sometimes, you might not know who the birth father is. Whether it was a one-night stand, sexual assault or you don’t know the father’s name, this does not mean you cannot place your baby for adoption. Adoption Choices of Oklahoma will do its due diligence and try to locate the birth farther on any and all information we are able to compile together, but your adoption process will not be paused. You can still create your adoption plan and look for prospective adoptive parents. If the birth father does not show up during the allotted time, your adoption journey may proceed to finalization without his signature.
But no matter if he is present or not, adoption is still an option for you and your baby.
Supportive Birth Fathers
Although it’s more common to see birth fathers uninterested in the adoption process, there are still many cases where he is present and supportive of your decision to adopt. These birth fathers will know what is taking place and be supportive during the adoption process. There are many reasons birth fathers choose adoption for their child. However, having a birth father who is supportive of your decision and can help throughout the process makes it much easier for those tough decisions to be made.
Unsupportive Birth Fathers
Unfortunately, in many cases, the birth father chooses to be uninvolved or unsupportive in the adoption process. These birth fathers are not present through any part of the adoption journey overall. However, it is still possible to continue the adoption process without the involvement of the birth father. If you have any questions on how to do so, please do not hesitate to contact our office for further assistance.
