Understanding Surrogacy in Oklahoma: How Long Does it Take to Become a Surrogate?

Because surrogacy isn’t often talked about, it can be difficult to have all the necessary information about surrogacy. A lot of Oklahoma residents don’t even know if surrogacy is legal in Oklahoma— newsflash: it is. As a result, many people don’t know the answer to the question, “How does surrogacy work?” And many women considering surrogacy specifically want to know how long it takes to become a surrogate mother in Oklahoma.

Even though surrogacy doesn’t have much representation in the media, there are thousands of surrogates across the United States. Luckily, with the growing access to the internet, it’s easier to learn about surrogacy than it ever has been. However, sometimes it’s nice to talk with experts. One of the biggest reasons to reach out to surrogacy agencies in Oklahoma is to get some answers to your questions.

At Adoption & Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we have some answers for you. We know that it’s difficult to determine if surrogacy is right for you without the important background information, so we want to be your educational resource. If you want to learn more about the length of surrogacy in Oklahoma, we’re here to give you the information that you need.

How Long Does it Take to Become a Surrogate in Oklahoma?

Unfortunately, because surrogacy isn’t an exact science, there is no one size fits all surrogacy journey. Some are surrogates for longer than others because certain parts of the surrogacy process can fluctuate depending on the circumstances. However, we do have some rough estimates on how long surrogacy may take.

Pass the Surrogacy Requirements in Oklahoma

Before you begin your surrogacy journey, you need to pass the surrogacy requirements in your state. Here are some of the requirements you need to fulfill to work with Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma:

  • Surrogates cannot smoke or be alcohol-dependent.
  • Surrogates must be between the ages of 21 and 39.
  • Surrogates must have carried at least one healthy baby to term in the past.
  • Surrogates cannot be dealing with certain mental health struggles like depression or bipolar disorder.
  • Surrogates must have a BMI of 33 or lower.
  • Surrogates cannot have received any new tattoos or piercings in the past 12 months.

If you meet these requirements, you’ll fill out an application for our agency. This initial onboarding process shouldn’t take more than a few weeks.

Be Matched with an Intended Family

After you begin working with our agency, we’ll match you with an intended family. This process varies in length, but you’ll often be matched with an intended family within a few months. We want to take our time to ensure both you and the intended family will be a good fit. If you have a specific person you want to become a surrogate for, let us know, and we can make it happen.

Go Through the IVF Process

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most unpredictable factors. It’s impossible to predict how long it’ll take you to become pregnant, but if you already match the surrogacy requirements, you’re likely a good candidate for IVF.

One full cycle of IVF takes about 4-6 weeks, and you may have to repeat the process if you don’t get pregnant in the first round. When you are meeting with your doctor during IVF, they’ll be able to give you a more accurate prediction about how long the process will take for you personally.

Go Through Pregnancy

The last step of surrogacy is carrying the baby. If you carry the baby to term, your pregnancy will last somewhere between 38 to 40 weeks.

How to Become a Surrogate in Oklahoma

Surrogacy is a beautiful process. Many people who would’ve never been able to have biological children in the past— like same-sex couples, single people, and older couples— now have the opportunity to grow their family. Surrogates are the ones who make this possible.

It takes a certain type of person to become a surrogate, and surrogacy isn’t for everyone. However, it could be right for you. If you meet the surrogacy requirements in Oklahoma and you feel like surrogacy is a good choice for you, reaching out to a surrogacy agency in Oklahoma is the next step.
