What are the Disqualifications for OK Surrogacy?

Becoming a surrogate is not an easy choice for anyone. For some, pregnancy is very complicated, and for others, pregnancy is impossible. But you are different. You had a safe pregnancy and found the experience to be fulfilling. You realize that so many can’t say the same and choose to close the gap preventing someone from growing their family. Kudos to you for looking into the process of surrogacy. The decision to become a surrogate mother is selfless and takes so much bravery. And you are a superhero. Now you might be wondering what are the disqualifications for OK surrogacy. At Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma, we want to thank you for your courage and strive to support you throughout this fantastic journey. Let us give you all the answers to your riveting questions and make this process that much easier for you.

Uncovering the Definition of Surrogate and What are the Disqualifications for OK Surrogacy

You may be thinking, “Are there options for surrogacy in Oklahoma?” or, “What is a gestational carrier?”And we are happy to provide answers.

Though no longer legal, a traditional surrogate was someone who became impregnated by an intended parent or donor sperm and created the embryo within using their egg. For this reason, a traditional surrogate was also the biological mother of the child. As you can imagine, this created many legal and emotional issues for all people involved, and most countries banned this practice many years ago.

Legal surrogacy is called gestational surrogacy. As a gestational carrier, you are not biologically related to the child. You see, the intended parent’s sperm or egg would be combined, sometimes with a donor’s sperm or egg, in a lab under supervision to create an embryo. The lab transfers the embryo to your uterus through a process called IVF (in vitro fertilization) in hopes that the embryo will implant for you to carry to full term.

Surrogate Qualifications

To qualify for becoming a surrogate mother, you must submit to a psychological evaluation, background checks, and hormone treatment before and after the transfer of the embryo.

There are strict surrogacy requirements. Some lesser-known conditions are that being younger than 21 and older than 39 will disqualify you. Using government assistance or parenting a child using government assistance will also disqualify you. Having a BMI higher than 31 will remove your chances of qualifying as a surrogate mother. If you have ever suffered postpartum depression, have a history of mental health issues, or take medication for mental health issues, this will disqualify you. Here are some disqualifications for OK surrogacy:

  • Being alcohol dependant
  • Living with a smoker or being a smoker within one year of application
  • Having blood transfusions, tattoos, or piercings within one year of application
  • Living outside of the US or not being a United States citizen
  • Taking any illicit drugs or having a sexually transmitted disease

You will need to agree and be comfortable with prescreening and background checks to determine your mental wellness before embarking on the journey. In addition, some intended parents may want to come to every doctor’s visit to participate in the entire pregnancy. In the beginning, the paperwork you sign before undergoing any hormone treatment will have these agreements laid out.

The list of disqualifications may seem long, but they come from fertility clinics and the APA to protect your safety and ensure the healthiest journey for everyone involved.
