What Does ICWA Stand For, And What Does It Mean?

The ICWA stands for the Indian Child Welfare Act. This act was put in place in 1978, and its purpose was to stop the separation of American Indian and Alaskan Native children from their families. Before this act was passed and put into effect, these children were being separated from their parents, extended families, communities, and tribes even when there were members of their family or extended family that could have taken custody of them and cared for them.
