What’s the Difference Between the Adoption Process and an Adoption Plan?

Adoption comes with its own set of vocabulary. Our job at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma is to help you understand that vocabulary and all of the intricacies of adoption. We specialize in all things adoption-related at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, and we are here to help you and answer any questions you may have. Adoption may seem confusing initially, but it certainly does not have to be.

What is the Adoption Process?

The adoption process is a step-by-step process that birth mothers follow throughout their adoptions. This process includes everything from choosing who will adopt your baby to the kind of post-placement support you may need.

At Adoption Choices of Oklahoma, the adoption process begins with your being assigned a birth parent counselor who will act as your guide throughout the adoption process. They will determine whether you have adequate medical care and what financial assistance, if any, you may need.

After intake, we will begin helping you look for an adoptive family. We provide our birth mothers with a range of prospective adoptive family profiles. If you do not like the initial families we present to you, we will find additional prospective families. We never want you to feel rushed during any part of the adoption process, and this step is no different.

Once you choose your child’s adoptive parents, your adoption facilitator will determine whether or not you need additional financial or medical assistance. Your birth parent counselor will remain in contact with you throughout your pregnancy and will act as an advocate for you in the hospital.

We continue to provide assistance to all of our birth mothers up to eight weeks after delivery.

Adoption Choices of Oklahoma provides supportive counseling to its birth mothers up to six weeks after delivery. We do not abandon our birth mothers after they have given birth; we continue to assist you long after the adoption process is complete.

What is an Adoption Plan?

While an adoption plan is similar to the adoption process, adoption plans are specific to each individual birth mother. An adoption plan is your specific plan for adoption, and it includes what kinds of assistance you may need and the type of adoption you would like. Basically, adoption plans are much more specific than generic adoption plans.

Your first step in your adoption plan is to choose an adoption agency. We welcome families and birth mothers of all backgrounds, and we do not discriminate. “All families are welcome at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma and will be treated with equal support and compassion.”

The next step of the adoption plan is to choose your child’s adoptive family. You should make this decision based on the type of life you want your child to lead. Do you want them to have siblings? Single parent or two-parent household? What are the prospective adoptive parents’ religious preferences? Where do they live? Questions like these will help you make an informed decision about who you want to adopt your baby too.

Next, you will develop your plan for the hospital. Who do you want present during the birth? Do you want to hold the baby? Do you want your birth parent counselor present during the birth? Do you want a natural or cesarean birth? Your birth plan is entirely up to you.

The amount of contact you will have with your child after the birth is dependent on the type of adoption you choose. Open, closed, and semi-open are the three different types of adoption. Each type of adoption has its own pros and cons, so it is up to you to decide on the type of relationship you want to have with your child and their adoptive family.

Adoption plans and processes are similar, but one is more personalized than the other. The adoption process is the overarching plan for adoption that does not change per birth mother, and an adoption plan is specific to each individual birth mother. Your adoption plan is part of the adoption process.
