Where are They Now: An Adoptee’s Story – Maria

Maria’s Adoption Story

Ever since she was little, Maria has always known that she was adopted. Her adoptive parents told her her adoption story from the very beginning. Her adoptive parents already had two children before she was born, but they had always wanted to expand their family through adoption.

Now Maria is 21 years old and enjoying life as a college student. Growing up, she had a well-rounded childhood with her family. Some of her favorite childhood memories include attending ballet lessons with her older sisters and taking the family dog to the dog park on the weekend. Family pictures cover the walls of her dorm.

While Maria never felt like she was different from the rest of her family, she admits that there were times that her mind would wander to the “what ifs” as she got older.

What if she hadn’t been placed for adoption? How would her life have been different?

It wasn’t that she didn’t love her family. In fact, she loves them with her whole heart. But, knowing that there was a whole other family out there that was connected to her was simply mind-blowing.

Maria notes that she doesn’t know much about her biological family because open adoptions weren’t very popular when she was adopted. However, she can’t help but picture them as loving people. After all, they sacrificed so much for her to have a bright future.

Searching for Her Biological Family

Most recently, Maria has started working with the adoption agency to find her biological family. She hopes that both her adoptive family and biological family can meet one day and swap stories about their lives. Furthermore, she hopes she has the chance to look her birth mother in the eye and tell her, “Thank you for choosing adoption.”

But until that happens, Maria wants her birth mother and any other birth moms to know that they are not weak. In fact, they are some of the strongest people of all. Additionally, while you may not personally know your child, please know that you hold a special place in their heart just like they do in yours.

A Note from Adoption Choices of Oklahoma

If you are a birth mother who has placed her baby for adoption, we know that you may often wonder what your child’s life is like – especially if you did not originally have an open adoption. We hope that Maria’s story brings you peace and comfort.

If you are a birth mother considering adoption, know that open adoption is an option. You have the opportunity to still be part of your child’s life, and they can still have a wonderful future with their adoptive family.

However, whether you choose an open or closed adoption, choosing to place your baby for adoption does not make you weak. Choosing to place your baby for adoption means that you are a strong and selfless woman.

No matter where you are in your pregnancy, Adoption Choices of Oklahoma is here to help you provide your child with a bright future through adoption.
